Though primary education is compulsory and free in most countries, many children are unable to complete their primary education in many countries, especially in Asia and Africa. Poverty and ignorance are the main reasons why children drop out of school. This has a long term effect on society in general, as an uneducated person finds it difficult to find work and will generally earn less. Low income parents may prefer to have their underage children work and contribute to the family income, instead of spending time in school.

Charities and welfare organisations working with children help their education by:
1. Arranging special classes at timings convenient to the children.
2. Paying the tuition fees.
3. Arranging for teachers and paying the salaries.
4. Purchasing and/or paying for text books and other stationery.
5. School uniforms
6. Desks, chairs and other school furniture.
